Treasure-trove of theatre

Oldest items date from around 1550, the most recent acquisition was made yesterday

Theater Instituut Nederland (TIN) is a treasure-trove for anyone who is interested in theatre. TIN collects photographs, prints and drawings, costumes, scale-models, details of premieres, posters, programmes, cuttings, archives, songs and video recordings. Theatre is living heritage and transient by definition. Once the curtain falls, the performance is over. By collecting photographs, video recordings, costumes, etc, TIN attempts to conserve and reconstruct the performance; to record and tell the story of the history of Dutch theatre.

What happens to the collection? Who are its users?

The collection is used for TIN projects, for example, exhibitions such as the internationally touring exhibition, Ergens & Overal [Anywhere & Everywhere] about site-specific theatre, which uses hundreds of photographs and video clips. Or for the educational exhibition Backstage, which is currently touring Dutch theatres.

At the same time, the collection is also used for projects like the website eenlevenlangtheater.nl (A Life of Theatre - an online gallery of honour of Dutch theatre personalities), presentations during debates, publications, research and digital projects like De Theaterencyclopedie [The Theatre Encyclopedia]. The collection is also used to illustrate television broadcasts, for interior design, publication, photography and as inspiration for new productions.

Interest is not just confined to the Netherlands, as demonstrated by the recent loan of the painting 'De Nar' [The Idiot] by Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem for the exhibition Tronies: Marlene Dumas and the Old Masters in the Haus der Kunst in Munchen. Since the spring of 2010, the Teatterimuseo in Helsinki has had an inflatable version of 'De boerenkermis' [The Country Fair] by Pieter Balten covering a wall for their new permanent exhibition.

Media Centre

As well as the collection, TIN boasts the largest centre for theatre-related media in Europe. The extensive collection embraces all theatre disciplines, from circus to cabaret and from dance to opera. As well as a great many books, magazines and texts, you can also consult an extensive data base, request archives, production documentation and photographs and watch video recordings.

The material is used by diverse groups: actors, directors, art and theatre historians, students of drama, design and art history, writers, journalists and theatre lovers.
