Theatre after Tomato

Forty years of innovative theatre in the Netherlands

It is exactly forty years ago, on 9 October 1969, that the notorious Action Tomato took place. Tomatoes were hurled at the actors in the Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam in protest against the fossilized theatre climate. The exhibition 'Theatre after Tomato', which opens in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum on 5 October 2009, looks back on the innovations that came after the action and which have led to the unique richness and diversity of Dutch theatre today. The exhibition is on show until 7 February 2010.

Action Tomato profoundly changed the Dutch theatre system. After the action, young theatre makers and initiatives were finally given more opportunities. A broad range of exceptional and high-quality theatre flourished in the search for a new audience, social commitment, and other working methods and platforms. This was the period when work was done in collectives, there was an exodus from the municipal theatres, spectacles were created for unusual locations, and specific public groups were targeted.

Exhibition

The exhibition 'Theatre after Tomato' naturally starts with the moment when the theatre company De Nederlandse Comedie became the butt of the activists at the end of the 1960s. They protested against the theatre system, the stars of the stage, and the élitist performances. The exhibition goes on to offer a bird’s-eye view of the makers, companies and productions that sprang up afterwards and determined the developments in Dutch theatre (such as Werkteater, Dogtroep, youth theatre, and the Mickery productions). 'Theatre after Tomato' also traces the continuity with theatre makers today who now represent the richness and diversity of Dutch theatre, such as Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Lotte van den Berg, Eric de Vroedt, Dries Verhoeven, and MC (Made in Da Shade/Cosmic Theater).

Series on important developments in Dutch theatre

'Theatre after Tomato' in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum is the third in a series of exhibitions that the Theater Instituut Nederland (TIN) has jointly organized this year with different museums on important developments in Dutch theatre in the past few decades.
